Our Horticultural Attempts

Dan and I have attempted to grow many things in our yard.  Most of them have been successful.  Well, except for the 10 or so out of 20-some altheas we killed and two of our three sage bushes that died.  Other than that, we are doing pretty good!

In our yard, we currently have the following plants:

Back-yard
2 monster Rosemary bushes
1 Lady Bank's Rose bush
Many (many) Irises
A good number of Daylilies
Some Daffodils
1 magenta Oleander
1 Gala Apple tree
1 Texas Star Hibiscus
1 Texas Sage
12 or so Althea
1 Gardenia
3 Gladiolas
1 Pomegranate
Front Yard
Multiple miscellaneous bushes that came with the house
4 miniature Crepe Myrtles
1 crooked Pin Oak
1 Live Oak (taller than 5 feet)
3 Saw-tooth Oaks (smaller than 3 feet)
1 Pecan tree (smaller than 3 feet)
2 European Rose trees

We really don't have a large yard.
One day many years in the future, the next owner
of this house will have quite a bit of fun removing trees.

Critters

We attempt to grow everything in our yard organically to encourage a balanced eco-system in our yard.  As a result, Dan and I have found lots of things around our yard - spiders, frogs, butterflies, hummingbirds, earthworms, and even praying mantises and bunnies!

Praying Mantises (2003)
Purple Finch (2005)

Bunny (2004)

Garden Spiders (2004)

In 2004, we had a good number of large Garden Spiders that have decided that our yard was an all-you-can-eat-buffet of buggies - and they were right.  They were the one thing that helped keep the grasshopper population in control that year.  Of course, it didn't hurt that Dan and I would feed any grasshoppers we'd find to one of our 6 "pet" garden spiders.   Watching the spiders catch and wrap up the grasshoppers was like having our own nature show.  Who needs the Discovery Channel when we have our back yard?
